This post will be about not only what you should bring to college but, what I will be bringing with me for year two
As someone who recently finished her first year of college, you will forget some things. Or worse figure out what you need when you need it, not before.
College is stressful enough without having to worry about if you packed the right clothes or did not pack enough.
So this guide is full of the extra stuff that no one tells you to bring for your college dorm.
The Extra Stuff No One Tells You To Bring To Your College Dorm
1. Tool Kit
So many people forget to pack a tool kit but it comes in handy.
My dad bought me one for college and I used it whenever I had a problem (and it can teach them a lot of great skills).
2. Wedge Pillow
So many things fall in that wedge between your mattress and backboard.
This eliminates that problem.
3. Medicine
Sadly, getting sick in a dorm room is almost as certain as needing water to survive.
Students are packed so closely together that if one gets sick the whole dorm will get sick. Not fun, but just be prepared. I prefer NyGuil and DayQuil as my go-to’s but pick the medicine that works for you.
4. Cozy Slippers
The dorm floors are rarely ever cleaned and are just disgusting.
I highly recommend getting some form of slippers because they are easy to slip on and comfortable. For instance, if the fire alarm goes off just slip them on and you are good to go.
In college, you only need a few pairs of shoes but make sure to add these to the list.
5. Air Purifier
The air purifier above is not only super quiet but also clears the air of cooking oil and smoke.
These are great to help clear the air of the college flues in the air and give you peace of mind. I did not have an air purifier but my friends did and they LOVE them.
6. Cheap Box Fan
The dorm room will be hot and you will want a fan. I had the same fan listed above from my freshman year of college and it was PERFECT. If you prefer to sleep in colder temperatures and turn the fan towards the bed. I recommend you do the same, especially if it is a particularly hot day.
This fan can also double as a white noise machine to block out your wall mates during finals or when you need sleep.
7. Airpods/Headphones
Airpods were the first thing I made sure was in my backpack or my hands before I left my room. Walking across campus with no headphones is just awful. The music can help calm your anxiety and distract you from how your breathing sounds or if someone is staring at you.
These AirPods are also amazing because if your roommate ends up falling asleep at 8 pm every night, you do not have to turn your music or video down to a low volume.
8. Designated Going Out Shoes
You will step in mud, alcohol, and other shoe-destroying messes. Having a designated going-out shoe not only protects your other pairs of shoes but speeds up the time getting ready. I had Airforces 1 as my going-out shoe. Due to them being white, it was super easy to style and was always reliable.
These shoes will not break or be destroyed if you step in mud.

9. Card Holder
Carrying a purse or wallet can get annoying and will stop carrying one around. If you plan on going to bars or fraternity parties, carrying a purse may get stolen.
Another perk of holding your cards on the back of your phone is your student id. To get food or to enter your dorm building, a student id is required. If you know you won’t carry a purse or wallet everywhere you go, I highly recommend you buy one of these.
10. Invest In A Good Rain Jacket
This NorthFace jacket listed above is the exact one I have. I use it every time it rained and it not only kept me warm but, protected my phone from the rain. I would recommend sizing it up so you can wear it over your sweatshirt if it gets cold.
11. Portable Vacuum
If you have even slight a thought you will eat in your bed or dorm room, get a vacuum. Crumbs can find their way onto surfaces very easily but end up being very hard to clean up. With this vacuum, you can not only clean it easier but, avoid attracting bugs into your room.
12. Ice Maker
This ice maker was by far the most expensive appliance I brought to college that I did not need. However, it was my favorite. On hotter days, this was perfect. I also used it to fill up my water bottles, when I knew I would be out for most of the day.
The ice maker listed above does not connect to a water source, so you would manually pour water into it, making it perfect for a college dorm or apartment.
Try to get your roommate to split this with you to bring down the cost.
