I was in the same boat. At the first party, I ever went to in college, I felt out of place and was honestly copying everything my friend was doing. She was a year older and I just wanted to feel normal like her.

Now, I can walk into a party and know exactly how to feel like the life of the party. You can too. Just follow my tips on what to do at a college party.

What to expect at a college party

  • The line for the bathroom will be long.
  • PDA will be happening.
  • Drugs and alcohol will be out in the open.
  • Themes. Each party should have a theme that you’re supposed to follow.
  • Do not expect people to come up to you.
  • Most fraternities rent a house and the rooms will be split. For instance, one room will have music and another for the bar.

What To Do At A College Party

1. Do Not Overdrink

Nobody likes the friend that you have to take care of due to them not watching what they were drinking. I understand that drinking helps anxiety but once you feel drunk, slow down and eat something. It will help you be able to stay drinking but not enough to be passed out on the floor.

2. Bring A Friend hopefully someone you trust

In the best-case scenario, this would be someone you trust. However, it is hard to find someone you trust in your first year of college. So just be vigilant and always be aware of who is near your drink.

It is sadly very easy for someone to drug your drink – do not let that drink be yours.

Never trust anyone at a party.

3. Follow The Theme

Every party has a theme. Follow it to the best of your abilities. Do not go out and spend $80 on a theme but with what you have in your closet.

This is one of my tips for college parties because it doesn’t make you stand out. You can merge in with other people and dance or drink. When you don’t follow a theme, it makes the attention drawn to you.

4. Figure Out If The Party Is BYOB or if drinks if offered

BYOB means Bring Your Own Beer.

Most fraternity parties will provide the alcohol but some don’t. Always ask so you do not get ambushed and can determine how much to drink at the pre-game.

5. Do Not Stay In Your Group

Staying in your group may feel safe and secure but you do not meet anybody. The whole point of college is to figure out who you are and navigate a life solo. Do not hurt your future to just feel secure for an hour.

Take a friend with you and go meet some people.

6. Talk To Everyone

This is where liquid courage comes into play (aka alcohol). I would never condone underage drinking but it is largely normal in college and many use it as courage. A college party is the best way to meet people. You can meet people outside your major, in different clubs, and even at different grade levels.

Pro tip – complimenting people is a great way to start a conversation with people. Do not compliment every person you see but when you see something you like, tell them.

7. Drinking Games

Join in on the games. You will see a wide variety of games at parties depending on what University you go to. The most common is Beer Pong. This is the game where you put beer into a red solo cup and try to sink holes in them with a partner.

This is a great ice breaker of sorts. You can walk up to the table and ask to play next. If the game is exciting, people will start to watch.

Instead of standing around awkwardly – find a drinking game.
