3 Hard Truths You Need To Understand Before Going Through Sorority Recruitment…
- Sororities do cost money. The bigger the greek school – the more it cost. (We will get more into it below).
- You will talk to many girls and will hate some of them.
- Your looks and who you know matter.
The Benefits of Going Through Sorority Recruitment
According to IvyWise, fraternities, and sororities are known for their philanthropy, with Greek organizations across the country raising over $7 million each year for various charities.
Greek life is amazing when it comes to raising money for different philanthropy but also for giving young women opportunities to lead. Many sororities hold leadership positions to run their chapter for their sorority. Those positions teach women how to run large organizations – that is a great skill to learn in College.
Another benefit of going through sorority recruitment is networking. Once you are initiated, you are now sisters to a large number of females before you. Imagine you are in a job interview and the hiring manager is in the same sorority as you. That is an easy way to make friends with her and end up being more likely to get hired.
Most of the time, you meet your forever friends. Are there cases where people hate their sororities and everyone is it? Yes but there are cases where the opposite happens. It is also important to realize when you have over 100 girls together – there will be fights and drama.

The Negative Aspects To Know Before Going Through Sorority Recruitment
There are three negative aspects anyone should know if they are debating being a PNM: responsibility, people, and rules.
PNM stands for potential new member.
In a sorority, you are responsible for a lot of elements of your life. For instance, you have chapters every Sunday and mandatory events you must go to. In most cases, you will either have to have a valid excuse or pay a fine.
Not only do you have to attend certain events but most chapters make each member have a certain amount of volunteer hours. As you can tell, your calendar is slowly filling up.
Another negative aspect can be the people. When you have a large group of people in an organization – you will not like anyone. You cannot expect to like every single person or for them to like you. However, if you are having a hard time finding friends in the sorority and have met every single one of them – then I recommend you think about dropping.
Yes, there are rules you have to follow with recruitment. These rules depend on what chapter you are in and can change every year. For example, Sorority girls are not allowed to post alcohol on Social Media if they are underage. Simple rules like that do happen and occur often.
Let’s talk Money…
As someone who is a sorority member, money is rightfully a big conversation topic during recruitment.
The truth is you are going to spend money. The amount can vary between $300 to thousands, depending on what chapter and school you are attending.
A list you will be spending money on:
- Chapter Fees
- Housing Fees
- Recruitment Fees
- Outfits
Money should be a part of the conversation but is not supposed to be talked about during recruitment. The reason is due to them not wanting you to make your decision based on the price.
However, most sororities have payment plans and/or scholarship opportunities.
The Truth About Hazing
Yes, hazing happens BUT do not decide to not go through recruitment because of hazing. Hazing is slowly going away with each sorority and unless you know for a fact that a certain sorority is doing it – I recommend still going through recruitment.
